On April 22, 2025, HHS and FDA announced a plan to phase out all petroleum-based synthetic food dyes by the end of 2026 as part of the "Make America Healthy Again" initiative. The FDA will revoke approvals for dyes like Citrus Red No. 2 and Orange B, and work with industry to eliminate six major synthetic dyes. Efforts also include promoting natural alternatives and accelerating research on food additives' health impacts, especially on children.
