Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) has invited public comment on an application proposing the use of 3-fucosyllactose (3-FL), a human-identical milk oligosaccharide (HiMO), in infant formula products. Produced using a genetically modified source organism, synthesised 3-FL has been assessed by FSANZ and found to be chemically, structurally, and functionally equivalent to the naturally occurring 3-FL in human breast milk.
The application highlights the potential health benefits of 3-FL, including promoting the growth of beneficial gut bacteria like Bifidobacterium and offering anti-pathogenic properties. FSANZ’s safety assessment confirmed there are no public health or safety concerns associated with its proposed use in infant formula.
While breastfeeding is the recommended method of infant feeding, safe and nutritionally suitable alternatives are necessary for infants who are not breastfed. All infant formula products sold in Australia must comply with the strict composition and safety requirements outlined in the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code, while New Zealand maintains its own regulatory standards.
