Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2025/89, published on January 20, 2025, authorizes the use of UV-treated powder from whole Tenebrio molitor larvae (yellow mealworm) as a novel food. The powder is approved for use in products such as bread, rolls, cakes, pasta, processed potatoes, cheese, and fruit compotes. The European Food Safety Authority concluded it is safe under specified conditions, although further research on allergenicity is recommended. The product must be labeled with information regarding its vitamin D content, produced through UV treatment.
