This is the consolidated version of Regulation (EC) No 1334/2008, governing the use of flavourings and certain food ingredients with flavouring properties in and on foods within the European Union, updated as of 19 February 2025.The regulation establishes rules for the use, safety evaluation, and authorisation of:Flavouring substances, Flavouring preparations, Thermal process flavourings. Smoke flavourings, Other food ingredients with flavouring properties. It includes requirements on: Maximum levels of certain undesirable substances (e.g. methyleugenol, coumarin), Conditions of use and labelling, The establishment of a Union list of authorised flavouring substances and their conditions of use. The regulation ensures that all flavourings used in foods are: Safe for human consumption, Do not mislead consumers, And are produced under good manufacturing practice (GMP). It harmonises flavouring rules across EU member states to maintain high consumer protection standards and a functioning internal market. This consolidated version incorporates all amendments and corrections up to 19 February 2025, including: Updates to authorised flavouring substances lists, Revised specifications for certain substances, Adjustments to usage conditions and labelling provisions.
