On July 18, 2025, WTO circulates notification from Nigeria regarding a Draft African Standard that specifies the minimum requirements for disposable nursing pads. The standard covers sanitary towels, tampons, napkins (diapers), napkin liners, and similar articles made from any material. It aims to ensure product safety, hygiene, and consumer information.
The draft standard includes the following key sections:
1.Scope
2.Terms and Definitions Including terms such as absorbent filler, nursing pads, non-woven, and rewet
3.Requirements Specifies that materials used must not harm the skin; filler materials like cellulose pulp or cotton must be skin-friendly, evenly distributed, odor-free, and free from wrinkles or distortion. Performance requirements and limits for contaminants are also included, such as:
-Lead (Pb): 0.1 mg/kg
-Cadmium (Cd): 0.1 mg/kg
-Arsenic (As): 0.2 mg/kg
-Cobalt (Co): 1.0 mg/kg
4.Packaging Products must be sealed in suitable packaging to prevent moisture, soiling, or contamination during storage and transport
5.Marking and Labelling Packaging must include:
-Manufacturers name or trademark
-Date of manufacture and expiry
-Country of origin
-Product name and batch number
-Instructions for use, storage, and disposal
-Quantity and size of nursing pads
