The Norwegian Food Safety Authority has announced a public consultation on proposed amendments to the national Novel Food Regulation (No. 1215 of 25 July 2017). The consultation was opened on 5 March 2026 and will remain open for stakeholder comments until 20 March 2026.

The proposed amendment aims to incorporate recent updates to the EU Union List of authorized novel foods established under Regulation (EU) 2017/2470 into Norwegian national legislation. The revision will align Norway’s regulatory framework with the latest European Union changes by implementing three EU amending regulations related to novel foods.

Among the key proposed changes is the authorization of the microbial product Clostridium butyricum TO-A as a novel food. The proposal also includes the approval of yellow tomato extract as a new permitted novel food ingredient. In addition, the consultation addresses revisions to the conditions of use for oil products derived from the microalgae Schizochytrium sp. (ATCC PTA-9695), which are commonly used as sources of omega-3 fatty acids in foods and food supplements.

Through these amendments, Norway seeks to ensure regulatory harmonization with the EU novel food framework and maintain updated safety requirements for emerging food ingredients entering the market.
