On 11 July 2025, Malaysia notified the World Trade Organization (WTO) of a proposed amendment to its Food Regulations 1985, under reference G/TBT/N/MYS/125, signaling a progressive step in food safety and nutritional enhancement. The amendment, initiated by the Food Safety & Quality Programme of the Ministry of Health Malaysia, aims to include a new probiotic strain—Lactobacillus plantarum TCI378 / Lactiplantibacillus plantarum TCI378—under the recognized group of Lactobacillus sp. in the Twelfth A Schedule.

This strain is known for its potential health benefits, including supporting gut health, enhancing immune function, and contributing to overall digestive wellness. Its inclusion reflects Malaysia’s commitment to aligning food safety standards with evolving scientific research and consumer health trends.
