Japan has notified the WTO of a proposed revision to its Food Sanitation Act, introducing maximum residue limits (MRLs) for the pesticide Spinetoram across a wide range of food categories. The notification was circulated on 17 July 2025, with comments open until 15 September 2025.Products Covered: Includes meat, dairy, vegetables, fruits, spices, cereals, animal fats, and oil seeds.
Objective: To ensure food safety by regulating pesticide residues in both imported and domestic food items.
International Alignment: The proposed MRLs conform to the Codex Alimentarius Commission’s pesticide index for Spinetoram.
Implementation: The standards will take effect after a grace period following adoption and publication in Japan’s Official Government Gazette (Kampo).
Stakeholders are invited to submit comments specifically on the updated MRLs, which are marked in the annexes of the proposal.
