Japan has issued an SPS notification (G/SPS/N/JPN/1356) concerning the revision of maximum residue limits (MRLs) for the pesticide Etofenprox in various food products. Etofenprox is a synthetic pyrethroid insecticide widely used in agriculture due to its effectiveness against pests and relatively low toxicity to mammals. The proposed changes are part of Japan’s ongoing efforts to align its food safety standards with international norms and updated scientific assessments. Under the new regulation, specific MRLs have been set for several food items—for example, apples at 0.5 ppm, tomatoes at 0.3 ppm, rice at 0.1 ppm, and leafy vegetables at 1.0 ppm. These limits apply to both imported and domestically produced food and are intended to ensure consumer safety while maintaining fair trade practices. The notification was distributed on 11 July 2025, and stakeholders have until 09 September 2025 to submit comments or concerns. This measure reflects Japan’s commitment to public health and transparency in regulatory processes.
