On 26 February 2026, Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) published Amendment No. 248 in the Commonwealth Gazette (FSC 188), introducing updates to the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code. The amendment authorizes several enzyme-based processing aids used in food manufacturing following safety assessments.

The amendment includes three applications: A1292, A1293, and A1328, which approve the use of specific enzymes as processing aids. These include phospholipase C and phosphoinositide phospholipase C derived from Bacillus licheniformis, as well as aminopeptidase derived from Trichoderma reesei. The approved enzymes are primarily intended for use in food processing operations such as the degumming of vegetable oils and fats, improving efficiency and product quality during manufacturing.

The newly authorized enzymes have been incorporated into Schedule 18 (Processing Aids) of the Food Standards Code. Their use must comply with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) requirements. According to FSANZ, the amendment took effect on the date of gazettal, 26 February 2026, following the Board’s decision on 18 February 2026.

This regulatory update provides additional technological tools for food manufacturers while maintaining safety standards under the Food Standards Australia New Zealand Act 1991.
