On January 13, 2026, The European Committee for Standardization (CEN) has officially published the EN 17826 standard to address chemical risk control in baby care products, reinforcing the EU’s overall product safety framework established by the General Product Safety Regulation (GPSR). EN 17826 sets specific chemical safety requirements and reference test methods for childcare articles that children may contact directly, regularly, or for long periods, such as strollers, baby carriers, bassinets, walkers and similar items. The standard establishes clear limits and controls for groups of hazardous substances, including certain element migration, flame retardants not fully regulated under current frameworks like REACH or POP, aniline, allergenic fragrances, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), formaldehyde and formamide, to better protect children’s health. EN 17826 also tightens limits on formaldehyde (30 mg/kg) compared to existing EU requirements and expands chemical safety evaluation in line with child exposure behaviours.
