The European Commission has adopted an implementing decision on 10 March 2026 renewing the authorisation for placing on the market of genetically modified maize T25 (unique identifier ACS-ZMØØ3-2) for food and feed uses in the European Union. The decision was adopted under Regulation (EC) No 1829/2003.
The renewal application was submitted on 22 March 2024 by BASF Agricultural Solutions US LLC, represented in the EU by BASF SE, requesting continuation of the existing authorisation previously granted under Commission Implementing Decision (EU) 2015/697.
Following the evaluation process, the European Food Safety Authority issued a favourable scientific opinion on 8 August 2025, concluding that the renewal dossier did not identify any new hazards, modified exposure, or scientific uncertainties that would change the conclusions of the earlier safety assessment for maize T25. The GMO Panel also determined that the environmental monitoring plan proposed by the applicant remains appropriate for the intended uses of the product.
Under the renewed authorisation, the following products may continue to be placed on the EU market:
Food and food ingredients containing, consisting of, or produced from GM maize ACS-ZMØØ3-2
Feed containing, consisting of, or produced from the same GM maize
Products containing or consisting of the GM maize for uses other than food or feed, such as import and processing
However, the authorisation excludes cultivation of maize T25 within the EU.
Regarding labeling requirements, the decision confirms that products must comply with the GMO labeling provisions under Regulation (EC) No 1830/2003. In addition, products containing or consisting of the GM maize must include the statement “not for cultivation” on the label and accompanying documentation, except for food products and food ingredients.
The decision also requires the authorisation holder to implement a monitoring plan for environmental effects and submit annual monitoring reports to the European Commission in accordance with Commission Decision 2009/770/EC.
The renewed authorisation will remain valid for 10 years from the date of notification, and all relevant information will be recorded in the EU Community Register of Genetically Modified Food and Feed.
