On 6 February 2026, Central Inspection Institute (NIFDC) of China issued a public notice soliciting opinions on six new/revised cosmetic microbial testing standards to strengthen technical requirements and ensure product safety.
The six draft standards (each accompanied by detailed drafting instructions) are:
1. General Principles for Microbial Testing Methods in Cosmetics – overall framework for microbial testing.
2. Testing Method for Total Microbial Count (Colony Count) in Cosmetics.
3. Testing Method for Heat-Resistant Coliform Bacteria in Cosmetics.
4. Testing Method for Staphylococcus aureus in Cosmetics.
5. Testing Method for Molds and Yeasts in Cosmetics.
6. Testing Method for Burkholderia cepacia Complex in Cosmetics.
These drafts establish standardised, precise laboratory methods (including culture media, incubation conditions, identification procedures, and result interpretation) for detecting and controlling microbial contamination in cosmetics.
Deadline for comments: 22 March 2026.
